Coffee machine error codes can indicate a routine operating prompt, required maintenance or a technical fault. Their meanings are specific to the manufacturer, model and machine configuration. Staff should follow the complete message shown on the display, carry out only the checks permitted by the relevant manual, and stop using the machine where there is electrical damage, uncontrolled leakage, abnormal pressure or a serious fault that returns.

Commercial coffee machines use error numbers, warning symbols and written messages to identify conditions that need attention. Some are straightforward. The machine may need water, beans, an emptied drip tray or an approved cleaning programme. Others point to interrupted water flow, a failed maintenance process, an internal component fault or a safety condition that should be assessed by an engineer.

The number alone is not enough to diagnose the problem. A code used by a Franke A300 should not automatically be applied to an A400, A600 or A800. JURA professional machines use their own display messages, while traditional espresso machines may communicate faults through pressure gauges, warning lights or control-panel alerts rather than numbered codes.

For UK businesses, the safest approach is to identify the exact machine, read the full display message and work from the relevant manufacturer instructions. Generic code lists can be misleading when they combine several brands or assign the same meaning to machines with different water, milk and control systems.

Why coffee machine error codes differ between machines

Commercial coffee machines vary considerably in their construction and setup. One model may use a removable water tank, while another is connected directly to the mains supply. One may use fresh milk and an automatic cleaning system, while another relies on powdered ingredients or a separate cooling unit.

These differences affect how the machine identifies a problem and what the operator is permitted to do. A water-flow message on a tank-fed machine may begin with a check of the tank. The same type of message on a plumbed-in machine may require the external water connection to be checked instead.

Manual editions can also differ. The advice for a machine should therefore come from the instructions that match its model and configuration, not merely the manufacturer name. Franke’s A300 manual, for example, states that its dashboard provides further information when the highlighted warning symbol is selected. It also classifies messages according to whether operation is temporarily interrupted, remains available, becomes limited or is locked.

What to do when an error first appears

Read the complete message before pressing buttons or restarting the machine. Where the display provides a warning symbol or information panel, open it and review the full instruction. A written message often gives more useful information than the error number by itself.

Record the make, exact model and serial number. Take a clear photograph of the entire screen so the code, wording, symbols and warning colour can be seen together. Note what the machine was doing immediately before the message appeared. A fault that occurs during filling may need a different investigation from one that appears while grinding, making a milk drink or running a cleaning programme.

Check whether the machine is tank-fed or plumbed in, and note whether cleaning, descaling or a filter change has recently taken place. This context helps distinguish an operating issue from a repeated technical fault.

Avoid repeatedly restarting the machine. A restart may be permitted for some messages, but it should not become the default response to every error. Record the fault first, follow the model instructions and arrange support if the same serious message returns.

The following information is restricted to models and manuals that support the stated meaning. It is not a universal code list for every machine sold under each brand.

The Franke A300 manual supports the E663, E409 and E79 meanings and actions shown above. The JURA GIGA W10 guidance distinguishes routine display prompts from Error 2, Error 5 and other numbered errors. The Fracino limits apply only to the machine families covered by the reviewed manufacturer manual and should not be transferred automatically to a different espresso-machine brand.

Franke A300 error messages

The Franke A300 combines an error number with touchscreen guidance. The highlighted dashboard symbol should be opened before any action is taken because the machine may provide further detail about what is unavailable and what the operator should do next.

A routine prompt may leave the machine fully functional or temporarily prevent a particular drink. A more serious condition may limit several functions or lock the machine’s resources. The display status is therefore part of the diagnosis, not just the code.

Franke E663 Drip tray full

E663 can appear when the A300 continues to report a full drip tray after it has already been emptied. This does not necessarily mean the tray sensor has failed.

The manufacturer identifies residue inside the tray and moisture on the rear surface as possible causes of an interrupted sensor signal. In practice, emptying the liquid alone may not clear the message. The tray, its rear contact area and the mounting bay need to be clean and dry before the tray is refitted.

If the message clears, the machine can normally return to operation. If it reappears despite correct cleaning and drying, further investigation is needed. Staff should not attempt to reach, adjust or replace an internal sensor.

Franke E409 Descaler concentrate not being dispensed

E409 is associated with the A300’s descaling arrangement where the relevant cartridge system is fitted. The message indicates that the machine is not receiving the expected descaler concentrate.

The first check is the visible cartridge level. The adapter, sealing ring and connection should also be inspected for visible contamination or descaler crystals. These areas can be cleaned only as described in the machine instructions. The approved descaling process may then be repeated once.

A damaged seal, leaking connection or repeated E409 message is no longer a normal operator task. Continuing to restart the programme will not resolve a damaged component and may leave the required maintenance incomplete.

Only the cleaning and descaling products specified for the machine should be used. Franke’s UK cleaning resources identify a dedicated descaler concentrate for the A300 range and separate products for its milk and coffee systems.

Franke E79 Flowmeter error 1

E79 means the A300 has not detected the expected water flow. The cause may be external, such as a water tank or mains connection issue, or it may lie deeper in the brewing path.

On a tank-fed machine, check that the tank contains water and is fitted correctly. On a plumbed-in machine, check the accessible water connection and coupling. Do not force a fitting that is damaged, leaking or resistant.

The A300 manual also identifies a possible restriction in the brewing module when E79 appears during product preparation. It lists cleaning and adjustments among the relevant responses, but component removal or grind changes should only be completed by staff who have been trained and whose machine instructions allow that action. For most workplaces, the sensible operator response is to confirm the water supply and run the approved cleaning programme.

If the error returns after these checks, the fault may involve the flowmeter, pump, valve, connection or brewing path. That requires proper diagnostic work rather than repeated resets.

What about Franke A400, A600 and A800 codes

This article does not assign the A300 codes above to the A400, A600 or A800.

Franke’s UK resources show that these machines have different configurations and cleaning procedures. The public UK information reviewed does not provide a complete, verified diagnostic-code table for each of those models. Publishing an unsupported list would recreate the accuracy problem this page is intended to correct.

When an A400, A600 or A800 shows an error, record the exact on-screen text, model and serial number. Follow the instructions displayed by the machine and the manual supplied for that exact model. If the message locks drinks, returns after the approved action or identifies an internal fault, use the appropriate Franke service route.

JURA professional display messages

JURA professional machines distinguish ordinary operating prompts from numbered Error messages.

On the GIGA W10, prompts such as Fill water tank, Empty drip tray, Fill bean container, Change the filter, Clean, Descale and Clean the milk system tell the operator what routine action is required. These are not automatically evidence of a failed internal component.

The prompt should clear after the task has been completed correctly. If it remains, first check that the tank, tray, cover or container has been refitted properly. A persistent prompt may indicate that the machine is not recognising the component or that the maintenance programme has not completed.

JURA Error 2 and Error 5

For the GIGA W10, Error 2 or Error 5 can appear after prolonged exposure to cold conditions. The machine may disable heating as a safety response.

The approved action is to allow the machine to warm naturally at room temperature. Do not use a portable heater, heat gun or another direct heat source. The machine should not be opened or dismantled to speed up the process.

If the error remains once the machine has reached room temperature, contact support.

Other JURA Error messages

The GIGA W10 manual does not give users an internal repair method for other numbered Error messages. It directs the operator to switch the machine off using the On/Off button and power switch, then contact customer support.

That instruction sets a clear boundary between normal operation and technical repair. Staff should not remove the casing, replace internal parts or use unofficial code lists to guess at the cause.

An unusually loud grinder should be handled in the same way. The GIGA W10 manual identifies foreign material as a possible cause but directs the user to customer support rather than advising them to reach into or dismantle the grinder.

The GIGA W10 examples should not be treated as a complete code list for every JURA machine. Use the instructions for the exact W, X, WE or GIGA model on site.

Traditional espresso machine warnings

Traditional espresso machines often communicate differently from automatic bean-to-cup systems. A numbered error may be replaced by an abnormal pressure reading, warning lamp, fill alarm or control-panel message.

For the Fracino machines covered by the manufacturer manual reviewed, normal steam pressure builds to approximately 1.0 to 1.2 bar. The manual tells operators not to use the machine if steam pressure rises above 1.5 bar. It also gives a stop-use limit of more than 12 bar on the water or pump pressure gauge. In either case, the instruction is to isolate the mains electricity and water and arrange inspection and repair.

Those figures are model-specific. They should not be applied to every traditional coffee machine. Iberital, La Pavoni, Dalla Corte and other manufacturers may specify different normal ranges and responses.

The Health and Safety Executive identifies a steam coffee machine as an example of pressure equipment. HSE notes that pressure equipment failures can release steam or hot liquid and that poor maintenance, inadequate repairs, unsafe working methods and weak operator training are among the factors associated with pressure incidents.

An unexplained pressure rise, uncontrolled steam release, failed safety control or abnormal gauge movement should therefore be treated as more than a coffee-quality issue.

Understanding the type of message

A consumable prompt asks for something the machine needs to continue, such as water, beans, milk or an emptied grounds container. It should normally clear once the item has been replenished or the container has been emptied and refitted.

A cleaning or maintenance prompt asks for a cleaning programme, milk-system clean, filter change or descaling process. The machine should be maintained with the products and procedure specified by its manufacturer. Interrupting a programme or using an unsuitable chemical can create a further problem rather than solving the original one.

A water-flow fault means the machine is not detecting the expected movement of water. The first checks may include the tank, water supply, accessible coupling and approved cleaning routine. A fault that remains after these checks can involve an internal pump, valve, sensor or blockage.

A mechanical fault may involve abnormal grinder noise, failed movement, a jammed component or repeated interruption during preparation. Fixed covers and protected components should not be opened by ordinary users.

An electrical or pressure condition requires the most cautious response. Visible cable damage, overheating, a burning smell, water reaching electrical components, failed controls, uncontrolled steam or pressure outside the model’s permitted range are reasons to stop using the machine.

When the machine should be taken out of use

The presence of an error code does not always make a machine unsafe. A request to refill beans is very different from an overheated plug or uncontrolled steam release. The decision should be based on both the message and the physical condition of the equipment.

Take the machine out of use where the plug, cable, socket or outer casing is damaged, where internal wires are visible, or where burn marks, staining, smoke or a burning smell suggest overheating. Stop use if water is leaking towards an electrical connection or from an area not intended to discharge water.

The same applies when steam escapes uncontrollably, pressure moves outside the safe range stated for the model, the machine operates unexpectedly, its controls do not respond, or a serious error returns after the single approved restart.

HSE advises that electrical work equipment should be suitable, in good condition and used by people who have been trained. It also says equipment should be removed from use and checked by a competent person where there is concern about its safety.

Use the normal shutdown control where it is safe to do so. Follow the site’s isolation procedure and prevent the machine from being switched back on until it has been assessed. Do not touch a wet plug or reach behind equipment where water is present.

What staff can check safely

Operator checks should stay within the boundaries of the user manual and the training provided for that machine.

Staff can read and record the display, check accessible water and ingredient levels, empty removable trays and containers, refit a tank or cover, clean accessible surfaces and run an approved cleaning or descaling programme. They can also check an external water valve or coupling if that forms part of normal operation and can be reached safely.

Staff should not remove fixed panels, dismantle a grinder, alter pressure settings, interfere with wiring, bypass a sensor or safety switch, or work on boilers, heating elements and steam circuits.

A machine can retain heat and pressure even after it has stopped preparing drinks. Switching it off does not automatically make internal repair safe.

Reporting the fault clearly

A useful fault report should contain more than the error number.

Provide the make, exact model and serial number. Send a photograph showing the whole display rather than a tightly cropped image of the number. State what the machine was doing when the fault appeared and whether it is tank-fed or connected to the mains.

Mention any recent cleaning, descaling, filter replacement or ingredient change. Report unusual noise, leakage, smell, heat or a change in drink quality. Explain which authorised checks have been completed and whether the message returned.

Reducing avoidable messages

Daily care will not prevent every technical failure, but it can reduce messages caused by full trays, empty ingredients, blocked milk paths, residue and overdue maintenance.

Follow the cleaning frequency shown for the exact configuration. Milk systems often require daily cleaning when milk drinks have been prepared, and rinsing alone may not complete the full hygiene process. The JURA GIGA W10 manual requires daily milk-system cleaning when milk has been used. Franke UK provides separate cleaning instructions for the A300, A400, A600 and A800 because their systems and configurations differ.

Water treatment also matters. Scale can restrict water paths, affect heating and contribute to repeated maintenance issues. Filters and descaling should be managed according to local water conditions, the machine setup and the manufacturer’s programme.

Planned servicing serves a different purpose from daily cleaning. It allows internal components, fault history, pressure performance, water systems and wear items to be assessed by a competent technician. Operator care and technical servicing support each other, but neither replaces the other.

Final thoughts

Coffee machine error codes are diagnostic clues, not universal repair instructions.

A routine message may need water, beans, an emptied tray or the correct cleaning programme. A verified Franke A300 code may point towards a tray sensor area, descaling cartridge or interrupted water flow. A JURA GIGA W10 Error 2 or Error 5 may follow cold exposure, while another numbered error should be passed to support. On a traditional machine, an abnormal pressure reading may be the warning even when no numerical code appears.

The safest process is to identify the exact model, record the complete message, carry out only the authorised external checks and stop using the machine when the fault involves electricity, uncontrolled leakage, steam, abnormal pressure or a serious recurring error.

This gives the engineer better information, protects staff and reduces the likelihood of a manageable fault becoming a more expensive repair.
